Google Discover! Sudden drops are nothing new?

Noticed this Reddit post in r/SEO yesterday! Someone was talking about suddenly losing all the visibility in Google Discover.

And in Google’s Search Console forums people been asking this recently.

Screenshot of a Google Search Central forum post by TaxiPoint Trade News, discussing a significant drop in Google Search and Discover traffic since 9 August. The user explains that their niche news platform had steady growth for years but recently saw Search impressions and clicks decline, Discover traffic flatline, and Google News indexing slow down. The post asks if these issues could be caused by changes on their end, mentioning a new paywall and delays in Google News indexing.

Which isn’t something that’s new. This happens with Google Discover all the time, where a site hasn’t been getting any visibility in user feeds and then one day out of no where some pages start to get visibility in Discover & within few days ends up getting like over 1 million clicks.

And on the opposite end of town, it may also happen that site was getting a lot of traffic from Discover over years! but then suddenly it drops and no visibility in Discover for months after that.

Even last year when Google started to rollout August Core Update there was a major turning off of sites from Discover. I wrote this one covering it. That’s more often than not it might be a Google side change that led to sudden removal of site from Discover rather than there being some specific issue on your site. And even over last 8 months idk what’s going on but Google Discover is just weird. And even in certain countries like Brazil its also messed up situation in Google Discover.

And that’s why I’ve been advising publishers to not spend too much on Google Discover optimisation if the expectation is that it would end up deliver ROI in few months.
