Per some emails obtained by 9to5Google – Sundar Pichai told Googlers that “I have been reviewing demos for the products and features we’re rolling out in the next few months”.
And just in Dec before 2025 started Sundar told Googlers that scaling Gemini for consumers will be Google’s biggest focus in 2025. Not only this before Dec back in Oct 2024 Sundar in an interview mentioned that Google is scaling AI Overviews and its been well received by search results.
I think as a company Google’s only priority is Gemini and as SEO professional whose goal is to help businesses rank in Google’s Search Results, its concerning for me. Because if Google keeps on adding more and more AI (powered by their Gemini model) features in search results.
This disrupts everything going from how sites get shown in Google’s results and how much traffic they can get.
My major concern is not only loosing traffic from Google’s Search results but their AI based products like Gemini Deep Research which can go ahead read content of 100s of sites and build a highly structured Google Doc for users to read.
Which may sound amazing for users, but what those sites getting out of providing so much information to Google? Should Google consider some revenue sharing??
And at the same time Google’s Head of Search, Elizabeth Reid’s only focus seems to be adding more and more AI related search features. While I wonder if ensuring that search results are of high quality is even a priority??
It's 1 Jan 2025 (Melbourne, where I'm based) and I hope that God saves our clicks being stolen by whatever new AI surface, Google's Head of Search, Elizabeth Reid is going to launch in usual search results this year!! I'm buckled up and recommend you to do the same π pic.twitter.com/uDLRcsT3AX

Even though, in a recent interview with MIT Technology Review when asked about Google straightway providing information to users as AI Overviews in search results and because of that people not visiting sites.
Reid said βYou essentially reach new audiences, because people can now express what they want more specifically, and so somebody who specializes doesnβt have to rank for the generic query.β
Even though Google has been saying that people are finding AI Overviews helpful and they are using answers their as jumping off points to the open web. And even Reid herself while in an interview with Fortune said “We do see people click, both within the AI overviews as well as on the rest of the page. And in fact, when we see AI Overviews, we see that the clicks that go out to the web are of higher quality.“
But I wonder if that’s the case then why Google isn’t providing impressions/clicks in Search Console for URLs appearing in there.
I hope that this year in 2025 Google hopefully provide this but God knows if they will or not?
But anyway my major concern for this year is what if Google is going to do over reach and stamping AI powered features everywhere in search results?? What would happen to the sites??
But as Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an interview with David Rubenstein back in Oct 2024 – βWeβve been around for the past 25 years. People come to Google because theyβre not only looking for what they want, but they enjoy the richness and the diversity of what exists on the web, right? So people are clicking through and going to a lot of sites. That is important for us.β
I hope that Google don’t do this over reach and continues to send billions of users to the open web from its search results rather than serving everything in results and users having to not go to the different websites.
