Last week I found that Googler Chris Nelson’s LinkedIn profile specifically mentions “detection and treatment of AI-generated content” and posted about it on X.
Can Google detect AI generated content?
Can Google demote sites using AI content and not rank them in Search Results?
Well, it’s not confirmed but Googler responsible for Search Quality team specifically saying that his team is working on detection/treatment of AI generated content definitely hints towards Google might have now (or perhaps in future, I don’t know) some tech to figure out if content on a page is AI generated and treat it accordingly (I guess not rank well in search results).
Also Chris is the same person who back in Nov 2024 posted update to the site reputation abuse policy which lead to removal of Forbes Advisor and others from Google Search.
Anyway it’s certain that Google is definitely working on detecting AI generated content and therefore treating it differently compared to human written content but I’m not sure what’s the scale and impact of this is?
How many search queries are being impacted even if Google applying some demotion signal for AI generated pages??
Also here a quick description of Google’s stance on AI, I found this on Search Engine Roundtable and suggest you check out the relevant links that are mentioned there.

And speaking of my personal stance on AI content, I don’t like it, of course AI can be a helping hand. And even to my SEO clients I just recommend publishing content that’s written by Humans and that too by assuming as if Google doesn’t exist because that’s what even Google said – write as if Google doesn’t exist.
