Google’s VP of Search Robby Stein back in July was interviewed on this podcast and during that when Zain Khan asked him about “Looks like the amount of AI generated content that exists on the internet might exceed the amount of human generated content in the on the internet in the near future. Have you given any thought to to how Google or any search engine is going to be able to handle and differentiate, what to give priority to?”
Robby said at 36:41 in podcast “I mean we think about this a lot. And actually there was a change recently, to you know, really make it a lot harder for really, low value content that probably was designed more to siphon traffic and manipulate in ways, wouldn’t be able to get, you know, the right how have that type of impact on the system. So there’s a lot of kind of attention and understanding that really well and being careful there too, obviously.”
The key thing here is he saying “And actually there was a change recently, to you know, really make it a lot harder for really, low value content” which might be hinting towards Google adjusting some algorithms to better tackle spam content (either be AI generated or other).
This podcast went live on 23 July 2025 and I’ve asked them on X (haven’t gotten a reply yet though) about when it was recorded cuz I’m interested in knowing if this change that Robby sort of mentioned went live with June 2025 Core Update (which was rolled out by Google during this period June 30, 2025 to July 17, 2025).
And also during the rollout of this update sites affected by Helpful Content Update (HCU) improved in ranking and that improvement can also be considered as relatively low value content got demoted therefore creating space in top positions for those sites to come up.
Though I’m just speculating this here! idk for sure what change Google did and what lead to what.
