last updated – 19 Dec 2024 I just added some information from Youtube spokesperson that he shared on X.

NOTE – This feature shows up for YouTube Premium subscribers only and is not available otherwise.

In July I noticed that Youtube in its description is showing “People” carousel which contains picture and names of people which were mentioned in the video. I posted about this on X. Again today I noticed that Youtube have extended this further and now it’s kind of building individual search results page for each person mentioned in this carousel.

Like for a Youtube video I noticed this in description

And if any name out of all these is clicked it shows a mini search results vertical format in the right hand side of video, here is how it looks

Also users can scroll through this mini search results and at end of this there is an option to select “Video all results” which opens usual Youtube search results for that person’s name.

Here is a quick screen recording showing all this in action.

I think that Google be able to pick up names mentioned in the video and then display it to users is a sign towards they can confidently extract specific mentions of names in a video. Similar to this for search results previously I’ve noticed Google showing two different carousels (also mention names) – “Mentioned in key answers” and “Mentioned in the news“.

I think that this highlights important of doing entity optimisation across different surfaces of Google because if Google is highlights people specifically across its different surfaces then it might be possible that something said somewhere else can help for example rank a page better in search results.

Like it might be possible that if 20 different YouTube videos are saying my name “Gagan Ghotra” in context of me being an SEO Consultant, this might be signal to Google that yes Gagan is an authoritative figure in SEO. Probably (just guessing) that might help my blog or perhaps Youtube videos too rank well in Google’s search results.

(Added on 19 Dec 2024) I noticed that someone on X posted and asked Youtube spokesperson “What is the secret sauce so that the “People mentionned” card shows up in one’s Youtube videos?” to which Youtube spokesperson replied saying “Hi! I think it pulls from Google Knowledge. So if you see a person in a panel when your search, you’ll like see them in the People row 🙏”

Its interesting that Youtube is identifying name of people mentioned in the video and then using its Knowledge Graph to show the list of people in the video description.
